Needle Coke
Back up Strength

IndianOil R&D Centre is well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for conducting studies on needle coke. While coker pilot plant is used to optimize the process parameters for a given feed quality, the center has elaborate facilities comprising Calciner Furnace, Pulverizer, Extruder, Graphitization Furnace, Dilatometer, etc. to measure the CTE and electrical resistivity of needle coke.

Delayed Coker Unit

The salient specifications of the coker pilot plant are :

» Feed rate: 8.0 kg/hr. (including recycle)
» Feed type: atmospheric/vacuum residues
» Coil outlet temperature: 450 - 550°C
» Operating pressure: upto 10 kg/cm2(g)
» Recycle ratio: upto 1.0
» Turbulizing steam: upto 10% of feed

Economics

This technology uses low value heavier petroleum streams without any pre-treatment. Also no revamp or augmentation of the existing delayed coker unit is necessary. Since the needle coke feedstock blend is different from the usual coker feedstock, in case of capacity limitation, the utilization of the coker unit for the purpose of secondary conversion may get reduced. The technology addresses this point and ex-refinery distillate yield is maintained.

The ex-refinery revenue improves due to production of needle coke of higher price with no additional cost input. Typical value addition for a 1.0 MMTPA existing delayed coker unit is around US$ 3 million per year. This figure will increase if there is spare capacity in the coker unit or other units for processing part of the normal feed to the coker unit.

Implementation Approach

» Integrated survey of the refinery configuration and identification of streams suitable for needle coke production.
» Examining the properties of the identified streams for exploring the preliminary feasibility for going ahead with the project.
» Comprehensive study on design of the existing hardware and the possible feed streams to finalize the feed blend and process conditions.
» Confirmation of feed blends and coke quality in delayed coker pilot plant run.
» Establishing the feasibility of needle coke production in commercial scale.
