Refining Technology

The R&D activities in the refining technology area cover fluid catalytic cracking (FCC), reforming, coking, hydro processing, merox, distillation, lube processing, catalyst development, visbreaking, simulation and modelling, value addition to refinery streams, novel process design and development, material failure analysis and residual life assessment of refinery and pipeline equipment, crude evaluation etc.

Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC)

In the FCC area, optimization of plant operation , condition monitoring of catalysts, evalution and selection of catalysts and additives ,development of catalysts and additives are undertaken .The FCC MOD simulation package developed by R&D centre has been successfully and profitably adopted .A recycle FCC pilot plant designed and developed by R&D scientists and engineers has proved its operational efficiency and utility and has been licensed to one of the independent refineries novel process technology designated as "Indmax" has also been developed to convert residues into LPG.

Hydroprocessing

With the recent commissioning of a hydrocraker pilot plant and laboratory facilites the R&D Centre is equipped to provide the necessary technical backup to commercial plants in evalution of catalysts and feed stock ,optimization of operating parameters, evalution of process technology of different licensers and development of new process .A steady state hydrocracker simulation model has been developed based on "continnum theory of lumping" and incorporated in the commercial plant .Hydrotreatment of diesel streams with the objective of meeting the future limit on sulphur in diesel specification in another research activityin progress .A kinetic reformer model has also been developed and validated for the producing gasoline meetings the benzene limits. A technology for 'food grade hexane' meeting WHO specifications has also been developed.
