Crude Evaluation, Distillation And Lube Processing

Crude evaluation for fuel and lube refineries is another important activity. Based on a large number of crude assays, a user friendly software has been developed for efficient management of data on various crude oil. Distillation and lube studies are undertaken to assist refineries in trouble shooting, efficiency evaluation and recommendation for improved efficiency with and without hardware changes in distillation units; and lube processing for improving product quality and yields.

Pipeline Transportation

Research studies on the rheological characteristics of crude oil from different sources and petroleum products aimed at the development of drag reducers and flow improvers additives are carried out to provide technical assistance to IndianOil's pipeline transportation operations

Instrumented pig is a high tech pipeline probe to monitor the health of crude and product pipeline which is at present available only in a few developed countries.IndianOil R&D Centre has developed this sophisticated technology in association with Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and set up a wet pipeline test loop to evaluate the performance of the prototypes of this device

Applied Metallurgy

Applied metallurgy function has been developed based on the critical importance of preventing unexpected component failures, especially in the refineries where components come under stress due to operating conditions and environmental influences. Unexpected failures result in losses of unscheduled shut-downs and loss of production for the operating plant. Material failure analysis brings to light the causes for the failure and also helps in adopting measures to prevent similar failure in features.
Residual life assessment is proactive step that can predict the remaining useful life of equipment and components, which guarantees their safe operation over a time span which is very valuable to the refineries.
